Marco ekri: "This 3 pages article is a must read from time.com; especially for those of you who believe the war was only a one man's personal vendetta and was simply not justified. It’s been eight weeks since the war is over and they have been to virtually every ammunition supply point between the Kuwaiti border and Baghdad and they have yet to find anything. Was all that intelligence wrong or was manipulated to justify against Iraq? Below is an excerpt of the articles.
How do take your country to war when it doesn't really want to go? You could subcontract with another nation, fight on the sly and hope no one notices. But if you need a lot of troops to prevail and you would like to remind everyone in the neighborhood who's boss anyway, then what you need most is a good reason — something to stir up the folks back home. This is a little flash movie that was made and dedicated in honor of the men, women and children and to all who sacrificed their lives and responded to the emergency of that tragic day. Please take a moment and watch this little movie and let's remember them all.
Note: This movie is 7MB, so if you don't have broadband/dsl internet connection, you may have to wait a long time for it to load but it is worth it..

:: News: When You Thought You Knew Where You Live.
|
|
Poste 02.08.2002 a 18:23:46 EDT
Marco ekri: "Well think again because precision mapping is raising new questions about land borders and few people are finding out that they don't live where they thought. Prior the arrivals of GPS (Global Positioning System), state, county and city borders were part law, part measurement, and part guesswork. Now, thanks to the new technology they're able to go back and discover where actual borders should be, and it's making many people unhappy. For example, some families in Rhode Island are finding out they may actually live in Connecticut and each state, county and city wants as much land as possible, because it means more tax revenues for them. So if you live near the border of any state, you may soon find you are in for a new address without moving and have to start dealing with new sets of laws and taxes. Read more about it here."

:: Immigrants, Not Americans, Must Adapt!
|
|
Poste 09.07.2002 a 14:50:30 EDT
BeauSoleil ekri: "This is an editorial written by an American citizen, published in a local newspaper.
"I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture, here in the
USA. Since the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, we have experienced a surge in
patriotism by the majority of Americans. However, the dust from the attacks
had barely settled when the "politically correct" crowd began complaining
about the possibility that our patriotism was offending others. I am not
against immigration, nor do I hold a grudge against anyone who is seeking a
better life by coming.
This idea of America, being a multi-cultural community, has served only to
dilute our sovereignty and our national identity. As Americans, we have our
own culture, our own society, our own language and our own lifestyle. This
culture has been developed over centuries of struggles, trials, and
victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom."

:: News: National Biometric ID Card
|
|
Poste 04.05.2002 a 00:22:38 EDT
Marco ekri: "CNN is running this article about two US congressmen who want to issue biometric identification card within the next five years. Those Virginia congressmen are trying to avoid the controversial 'National ID' issue by creating what would be new drivers licenses with biometric information embedded. Now my question to the KC community is; what do you think about having your retinal pattern embedded on a smart card and do you support such idea?
Personally I would not mind my retinas embedded on a smart card. Only if, it would allow me to see if I have correct change before pulling out my wallet."

:: How Did The U.S. Get A Naval Base In Cuba?
|
|
Poste 19.01.2002 a 03:06:13 EST
DrLove ekri: " How Did the U.S. Get a Naval Base in Cuba?
By Chris Suellentrop
What's the deal with the U.S. naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba? How did the U.S. get a military base in a hostile, communist country?
The United States seized Guantanamo Bay and established a naval base there in 1898 during the Spanish-American War. Five years later, the U.S. and Cuba signed a lease giving Guantanamo Bay to the U.S. as a "coaling and Naval station." The lease was required to implement the congressional Platt Amendment, which stipulated, among other things, that a naval base "at certain specified points to be agreed upon by the President of the United States" was required "to enable the United States to maintain the independence of Cuba."
