:: News: McDonald's Sued Over French Fry Ingredients
Posted on Thursday, March 02, 2006 @ 20:51:41 EST
Caramela writes: "I used to Looove me some McDonalds fries.. Thank goodness I stopped eating those things a few years ago.
I remember I had this Indian Chemistry teacher that filed a class action lawsuit, along with her vegetarian Indian community concerning their fries. Apparently, McDonalds were marketting their fries as a vegetarian-friendly food, while they still were frying their fries in the same grease as their burgers and chicken. It was big news around here, and they eventually won the case against McDonalds.
That was only a few years ago, and now it looks as if there is yet again more trouble for the Golden Arches regarding their fries. Read On....."

:: News: WMD: Weapons Of Mass Disappearance
Posted on Monday, June 02, 2003 @ 18:58:41 EDT
Marco writes: "This 3 pages article is a must read from time.com; especially for those of you who believe the war was only a one man's personal vendetta and was simply not justified. It’s been eight weeks since the war is over and they have been to virtually every ammunition supply point between the Kuwaiti border and Baghdad and they have yet to find anything. Was all that intelligence wrong or was manipulated to justify against Iraq? Below is an excerpt of the articles.
How do take your country to war when it doesn't really want to go? You could subcontract with another nation, fight on the sly and hope no one notices. But if you need a lot of troops to prevail and you would like to remind everyone in the neighborhood who's boss anyway, then what you need most is a good reason — something to stir up the folks back home. :: News: Long Hours at Computer Could Be 'DEADLY'
Posted on Wednesday, January 29, 2003 @ 13:46:17 EST
Marco writes: "The Australian news reports that New Zealand researchers have found that extended stints in front of the computer can cause fatal blood clots to form such as those that occur from long flights known as Deep Vein Thrombosis or economy-class syndrome. DVT is caused by blood thickening in a vein that forms a clot and causes the leg to swell. The most serious complication is when part of the clot breaks off and travels to the heart or other vital organs, which can sometimes be fatal.
The lead researcher said this is the first reported case of an association between repeated prolonged immobility sitting at a computer and life-threatening (lung embolism) and suggested the condition be called "e-thrombosis".
So next time your boss ask you to put in a few extra hours at your desk - remind him/her it could be deadly and you have this study to back it up. Come to think of it, I need to really reduce some of my time in front of the computer as I'm already a prime candidate."

:: News: 107-Year-Old Haitian Living In Florida.
Posted on Monday, December 09, 2002 @ 14:35:23 EST
Marco writes: "Miami Herald is running this article about a 107 year old Haitian living in Fort-Lauderdale, Fl., and father of 20, grand-father of 185 dreams of remarrying at his age for the third time. His name is Vilius Vilsaint and like his father and few other Haitians, he has beaten the odds and double the life expectancy which is 53 years. The article talks about his long and by no means easy life, his marriages, beliefs, secret for longevity and vitality and also his family. It is a very pleasant article to read and this time one that is on the positive side about one of our Haitian brother. May Vilius Vilsaint wish come true and live as long as his father who lived 110 years; if not even more!"

:: News: Chat Room slang In The Classroom
Posted on Thursday, September 19, 2002 @ 18:20:03 EDT
Marco writes: "The New York Times (registration requred) is reporting on how common chat room/IM talks (such as 'U' for you, 'R' for are, etc) are creeping into the classrooms and homework assignments from those teenage kids who spend a significant amount of time chatting online. As you may imagine, it makes it hard for teachers to grade the assignments, much less understand them because of the techno-generation gap. But teachers are fighting back by penalizing students for using the net slang in order to prevent further abuse of it. The saddest part is that it has become second nature to those students, that most of them don't even realize it until it is pointed out."

:: News: When You Thought You Knew Where You Live.
Posted on Friday, August 02, 2002 @ 18:23:46 EDT
Marco writes: "Well think again because precision mapping is raising new questions about land borders and few people are finding out that they don't live where they thought. Prior the arrivals of GPS (Global Positioning System), state, county and city borders were part law, part measurement, and part guesswork. Now, thanks to the new technology they're able to go back and discover where actual borders should be, and it's making many people unhappy. For example, some families in Rhode Island are finding out they may actually live in Connecticut and each state, county and city wants as much land as possible, because it means more tax revenues for them. So if you live near the border of any state, you may soon find you are in for a new address without moving and have to start dealing with new sets of laws and taxes. Read more about it here."

:: News: Asteroid Flyby Of Earth On August 18th
Posted on Thursday, August 01, 2002 @ 10:56:13 EDT
Marco writes: "If you are a science or an astronomy fan, this is your chance. On august 18th, according to the folks at NASA Space Science, an asteroid which measures about 800 meters across, and follows an orbit that ranges from the asteroid belt to the inner solar system, will glide past our planet and will be visible with binoculars from the northern hemisphere. Astronomers say it will cross the sky at 8 degrees per hour and fade out of view as it approaches the sun and hence goes through its various phases. Such a show only comes about twice a century, so mark your calendar and take a look before it disappears; you may never have another chance to see something like that again."
